Marie Schmit (born 1983 in Chambery, France) lives in Berlin as a freelance cellist and educator. She studied cello at the Musikhochschule Freiburg and pursued her education in baroque cello and music pedagogy in Frankfurt. In 2011, she was a scholarship recipient of the International Ensemble Modern Academy. The following year she studied "théâtre musical" in Switzerland at the Musikhochshule in Berne.


Marie Schmit is a member of the new music ensembles Oh-Ton, MAM.manukaktur für aktuelle musik and Trio Onyx for two cellos and percussion. She performs throughout Europe with several additional ensembles in a variety of genres including contemporary music, free improvisation, jazz, ancient music and scenic concerts. Marie Schmit actively works on her own projects and develops reflections about innovative concert forms.

 

Since 2016 she is teaching music pedagogy at the Musikhochschule in Basel (Switzerland) and is an artist in residence at ARNA 5 (Sweden) and WaaW (Senegal).
