Sun-Young Nam, born in South Korea, studied piano at Seoul National University with prof. Hie-Yon Choi, the Music University Hannover, Music University Karlsruhe with prof. Kaya Han (postgraduate concert examination with distinction) and chamber music with prof. Niklas Schmidt at the University for Music and Theatre Hamburg.
Since her studies in Germany, she has been intensively engaged with contemporary music. She has worked closely with Karlheinz Stockhausen and other composers, such as Helmut Lachenmann, Beat Furrer, Nicolaus A. Huber, Peter Eötvös and Johannes Schöllhorn.
She was a scholarship holder at the International Ensemble Modern Academy in Frankfurt in 2009/10.
Nam has performed with Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Linea, MAM.manufaktur für aktuelle musik, and as a soloist in Europe and Asia.
She has performed at numerous festivals, including Ars Musica, Brussels; Tongyeong International Music Festival; Ultraschall, Berlin; Acht Brücken – Musik für Köln and the Darmstädter Ferienkurse für Neue Musik.
Sun-Young Nam was twice awarded the first prize for interpretation at the Stockhausen courses in Kürten. In addition she has been awarded scholarships from the Kumho Cultural Foundation, Kunststiftung NRW, Kulturstiftung des Bundes and the Oscar and Vera Ritter Foundation.
